The ABCs of the ACT Changes

Some of you may have already heard that the ACT will be implementing significant changes in April. Let’s break down what those are:

Optional Science Section:

Students can now choose whether to include the Science section in their test. The core Composite score will be calculated based on the English, Mathematics, and Reading sections. If a student opts to take the Science section, its score will be reported separately. Note: Most students should still take the Science section, as many colleges have already reported they will still be requiring it.

Shortened Test Duration:

The overall test length has been reduced, allowing students to complete the core sections in approximately 125 minutes, compared to the previous 195 minutes.

Reduced Number of Questions:

The total number of questions has been decreased by 44, providing students with more time per question and reducing the pressure during the test.

Fewer Answer Choices in Math:

The Math section will now present four answer choices per question instead of five, simplifying the decision-making process for test-takers.

In April, these changes will only be available to people who choose to take the ACT online (rather than use the paper format). It’s expected that the updated format will extend to the paper format in September, although that could always change. If you’re taking one of the “school day” exams in 2025, you also won’t be seeing these changes.
