Stand Out Supplementals

August 1st is behind us, which means that the Common App is open for the upcoming admission season! And that means it’s time for students to begin writing their supplemental essays. While the Common App essay often gets the spotlight, supplemental essays play a critical role in showcasing a student’s personality, interests, and fit for a particular college. Here are some strategies to help students write supplemental essays that stand out.

Understand the Purpose

First, it’s essential to understand that supplemental essays are an opportunity for colleges to learn more about who you are beyond your grades and test scores. They allow you to express your individuality, highlight your passions, and demonstrate why you’re a good fit for the institution. Each prompt has its own focus, so take the time to analyze why the college is asking each question.

Brainstorm Your Ideas

Once you have read the prompt and taken the time to truly understand it, begin brainstorming ideas. Jot down ideas, experiences, and reflections that relate to the topic. Here are some brainstorming techniques to consider:

  • Free Writing: Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and write continuously about the topic. Don’t worry about structure or grammar; just let your thoughts flow.
  • Mind Mapping: Create a visual representation of your ideas. Start with the prompt in the center and branch out with related thoughts and experiences.
  • Reflection: Consider significant moments in your life that have shaped you. How do these experiences relate to the essay prompt?

Be Authentic

Colleges are looking for authenticity, so it’s important to be genuine in your writing. Share personal stories and insights that reflect who you are. Avoid clichés and generic statements. Instead, delve into your unique experiences, values, and passions. This authenticity will resonate more with the admissions committee and make your essay memorable.

Show, Don’t Tell

One of the most effective ways to engage your readers is through storytelling. Use vivid descriptions and specific examples to illustrate your points. Rather than stating that you’re passionate about community service, share a specific experience that highlights this passion. Describe the impact you made, what you learned, and how it shaped your perspective. This approach allows readers to connect with your story on a deeper level.

Edit and Revise

Writing is rewriting. After completing your first draft, take a break before revisiting it with fresh eyes. Look for areas where you can improve clarity, coherence, and engagement.

Tailor Each Essay

Remember that each supplemental essay should be tailored to the specific college. Research the institution’s values, programs, and culture to ensure your response aligns with what they’re looking for. Highlight why you are interested in that particular college and how you would contribute to its community.

With thoughtful reflection and attention to detail, you can turn these supplemental essays into a powerful tool for your college applications.
