Optimizing the College Visit Experience

College visits play a crucial role in helping students make informed decisions about their future. These opportunities provide a firsthand look at campus life, academic programs, and the overall atmosphere of a college. To make the most out of these experiences, it's essential for high school students to approach college visits with purpose and curiosity.

Do Your Homework Beforehand

Before stepping foot on campus, gather information about the college you plan to visit. Research the academic programs, campus facilities, extracurricular activities, and any other aspects that are important to you. This will help you formulate insightful questions during the tour and make the most of your time on campus.

Plan Ahead: Schedule a Guided Tour and/or Information Session

Most colleges offer guided tours led by current students or admissions staff and information sessions, which is the best way to use your time on campus. Guided tours often cover key areas such as academic buildings, dorms, recreational facilities, and dining options. Similarly, information sessions provide valuable insights into the admission process, financial aid options, and specific academic programs.

Immerse Yourself in Campus Life

While on campus, try to experience the day-to-day life of a student. Eat in the dining hall, explore common areas, and observe student activities. Pay attention to the campus culture and envision yourself as part of the community. If possible, arrange to sit in on a class or meet with professors in your field of interest to get a feel for the academic environment.

Explore the Surrounding Area

Take the time to grab a meal or coffee off-campus to get a better sense of the environment. Consider if it has the food options, resources, recreational activities, and general culture you’re looking for.

Take Photos and Notes

Document your visit by taking photos and jotting down notes. This will help you recall specific details about each campus and compare your impressions after visiting multiple colleges.

Most importantly, remember to be open-minded, ask questions, and try to envision yourself as a member of the campus community. And, don’t forget to have fun!
